Sneak peek at some of the most interesting findings

Enhanced customer experience boots average repair order value

Shops that focus on clear communication and building trust see a higher average repair order value. In fact, improving the customer experience was identified as the #1 factor driving higher ticket values. Industry experts recommend focusing on proactive listening, modern communication tools, and staff training to help customers feel informed and confident in approving additional services.

The technician shortage continues to challenge the industry

With technology advancing rapidly, the demand for skilled technicians with specialized training is higher than ever. Nearly 46% of shop owners reported that the technician shortage is having a significant impact on their operations. Within the report, you’ll find strategies from shop coaches and owners to help you recruit, train, and retain top talent.

Career pathing: A missed opportunity for technician retention

While 69% of shops agree that providing career paths is crucial for technician retention, only 10% have a formal program in place, and
40% reported not having career pathing opportunities for their technicians at all. Without a clear path forward, technicians are more likely to leave a shop. Supporting technicians by helping them define and pursue a clear career path and set of goals can differentiate a shop as an employer of choice in a competitive labor market.

Typical shop staffing ratios per bay

Wondering if your shop is properly staffed? According to survey data, the average shop has 0.7 technicians per bay and 1 service advisor for every 3 bays. For a 6-bay shop, this translates to about 4–5 technicians and 2 service advisors. Understanding these benchmarks can help you evaluate your staffing strategy.

A positive work environment is essential for technician retention (ranking higher than competitive compensation)

When it comes to technician retention, pay alone isn’t enough. Survey respondents identified a positive work environment as the most effective strategy for retaining technicians. While competitive compensation is important, shops that foster a supportive, growth-oriented atmosphere are more likely to build long-term loyalty.

The average number of vehicles serviced per bay per day

On average, shops across the U.S. service 2.2 vehicles per bay per day. If you’re servicing fewer cars than this, it might be time to reassess your workflow or explore strategies to increase your car count.
